Marios Oikonomou Dies at 33 Following Motorcycle Accident

Former Greek international defender Marios Oikonomou has died at the age of 33 after succumbing to injuries sustained in a serious motorcycle accident in Ioannina, Greece. He passed away nine days after the crash, which left him in critical condition and undergoing emergency surgery.

According to reports, the accident occurred on May 23, 2026, when Oikonomou’s motorcycle was involved in a collision with a passenger vehicle near the Hatzikosta Hospital area in Ioannina. He suffered severe head injuries and was immediately rushed into emergency treatment, including a decompressive craniectomy aimed at relieving pressure on the brain. Despite intensive care and ongoing medical support at Ioannina University Hospital, his condition remained critical, and he ultimately passed away nearly a week and a half after the crash.

Oikonomou began his professional football career at PAS Giannina before moving abroad to Italy with Cagliari. He later played for several clubs including Bologna, SPAL, Bari, Sampdoria, AEK Athens, Copenhagen, and Panetolikos. During his career, he made over 70 appearances for Bologna and earned six caps for the Greek national team between 2016 and 2018.

Known as a reliable central defender, he was respected for his physical presence, professionalism, and leadership qualities on the pitch. His career also included winning domestic honors with FC Copenhagen before retiring from professional football in 2023.

News of his death has led to widespread tributes from former clubs, teammates, and the wider football community, many of whom have described him as a dedicated professional and a respected figure both on and off the field.

His former club PAS Giannina paid an emotional tribute, calling him a person who “earned love and respect” and remembering his kindness and character beyond football.

Oikonomou’s passing marks a tragic end to the life of a player who had represented his country at the highest level and built a solid career across Europe. He is survived by family, friends, and former teammates who continue to mourn his loss.
