The Westfield, Wisconsin community is mourning the loss of Steven Scott “Steve” Janke, who tragically passed away in a car accident on May 31, 2026, at the age of 48. A devoted father, Marine Corps veteran, dairy farmer, public servant, and tireless advocate for military families, Steve’s passing leaves a tremendous void in the lives of those who knew and admired him.
Born on August 1, 1977, Steve was raised in rural Westfield by his parents, Alyson and Terry Janke. A proud graduate of Westfield High School’s Class of 1995, he excelled in athletics and developed a deep appreciation for community, hard work, and service that would define the rest of his life.
In 1996, Steve enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving honorably until 1999 with Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 12th Marines. His military service took him to Hawaii and Okinawa, experiences that helped shape his lifelong commitment to supporting fellow service members and veterans.
After returning home, Steve resumed his family’s dairy farming tradition while remaining actively involved in civic and public service. He served on the Westfield Area School Board and the CESA 5 Board of Control, dedicating countless hours to strengthening educational opportunities and supporting local communities.
Steve’s greatest professional impact came through his work on behalf of veterans. During his time with the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, he played a key role in creating Mission Wisconsin, an initiative designed to help transitioning military personnel and their families find opportunities and build successful futures in the state. His vision eventually expanded nationwide through Semper Forward, a program that helped thousands of veterans navigate career transitions and relocation opportunities.
Known for his passion, leadership, and unwavering belief in the value veterans bring to communities and employers, Steve became a respected voice in military workforce development. His work continues to benefit service members and their families across the country.
Above all else, Steve was a proud father to his children, Ashton and Emma, whom he loved deeply. Family and friends remember him as a loyal friend, dedicated mentor, and compassionate individual whose generosity and enthusiasm inspired everyone around him.
As loved ones gather to celebrate his life, they remember a man who lived with purpose, served with honor, and dedicated himself to making a difference. Steve Janke’s legacy will live on through his family, the veterans he helped, and the countless lives he touched through his service and friendship.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
